Is Housebreaking Your Shitzu Better Than Litter Box Training

Anyone who owns a Shitzu knows that these dogs are a stubborn breed. They like to do things their own way. In some cases, I think they believe they are in control. Housebreaking these types of dogs might seem difficult. After all, attitude and downright defiance seem to be the building block of these dogs. However, you can do it with a little patience. If housebreaking does not work, then litter box training might have to come into play.
Always remember that patience is the key. Most Shitzu’s can take six months or longer to learn a specific behavior. Therefore, try your best to housebreak him before you attempt to train him with the litter box.
Your Shitzu being as stubborn as he is might not want anything to do with you trying to alter his behavior. Therefore, he may see litter box training as an invitation to use the whole house as his personal toilet. Many Shitzu owners find out the hard way that litter box training should be a last resort. Try your best to housetrain him before giving in to his big beautiful eyes. In some cases, owners who give in to litter box training end up worsening the situation.
Sometimes Shitzu’s can grow to a good size even though they are a smaller breed. Therefore, litter box training might not be what you had in mind. Larger dogs, as you know, do not make good candidates for litter boxes. It is no doubt you will have a big mess to clean up every time he goes to do his business. Before you purchase the dog, ask the breeder if they recommend litter box training or housebreaking. The breeder would know how large the Shitzu puppies should get.
If you have tried everything and still no results, litter box training can be the last alternative. The best way to incorporate the litter box is to put the box where your Shitzu tends to do his business the most. Every time he uses the litter box, reward him with his favorite treat. Shitzu’s do not take well to punishment, so do not punish him. Your Shitzu will regress if punished.
I do not recommend substituting housebreaking for litter box training. In some cases litter box training can eventually cause you more problems. However, if you must use litter box training for whatever reason, make sure you put just as much fire and dedication into this, as you did with housebreaking. Litter box training can take longer than housebreaking, so you must have tenacity. In addition, litter box training may not give the same results as housebreaking. I hope you enjoyed the Shitzu information in this article.
